Monday Music: “Leaving Eden” by the Carolina Chocolate Drops

The grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops‘ recent album Leaving Eden has been hailed as the one of the best and most important roots albums of the year.

It’s their fourth album, and like their previous recordings, draws on the African American string band tradition while mixing in modern vocal styles, rhythms, and nuance.

Today’s Monday Music features one of the original songs( and title track) sung by Rhiannon Giddens. It’s nice musically, but it’s the sharpness of the lyrics that really move the song forward:

And the mockingbird can’t sing

Like the crying of the dove

And I can’t tell my daughters

All the things that I am scared of.

But I am not afraid of that bright glory up above.

Dying’s just another way to lead the ones you love.
