Aerial view of quartz sand mine operated by Unimin Corp. at Guion
Yesterday Ozarks at Large aired a recent piece by Jacqueline Froelich exploring strip mining in the north central Ozarks and its connection to fracking and the natural gas industry in Arkansas.
Also known as “fracked sand,” this form of mining isn’t for coal but rather the thick deposits of quartz sand, critical to unconventional natural gas drilling. This piece also touches on the depletion and contamination of ground water and other hazards.
